The steering rack converts the rotational motion of the steering wheel to the linear motion and aids in smooth movement of the wheels. While in power steering system, part of the rack contains a cylinder with a piston in the middle. The piston is connected to the rack. There are two fluid ports located at either side of the piston. The steering pump is connected with the steering wheel. When you turn the steering wheel, the pump passes the high pressure fluid which hits the piston and moves the rack, providing the power assist.
