The rack in power steering system is designed differently. The rack contains a cylinder with piston in the middle. The piston is connected to the rack. There are two fluid ports located at both the side of the piston. The steering pump is connected with the steering wheel. When you turn the steering wheel, the pump passes the high pressure fluid which hits the piston and moves the rack, providing the power assist.
