Steering wheel is the part of the steering system that is manipulated by the driver. The rest of the steering system responds to such driver inputs. The power steering utilizes a hydraulic pump mounted on the engine and driven with the help of a belt. The fluid in the system is held under pressure until the wheel is turned. Rack and pinion steering is one of the oldest types of steering system and it is still in use. It plays a major role in the movement of your Geo car. Inside the rack body a flat rack gear moves in a linear direction driven by a circular gear called a pinion. The steering wheel is connected to the pinion gear (shaft). At the both ends of the rack, a tie rod connects the spindle of the wheel. In power steering, the rack design differs. Here, the steering pump passes the high pressure fluid to hit the piston and the rack is moved. Each and every part in the steering system should work properly. Any steering component which is not in good condition can cause the vehicle to lose its control.
