Not many people really stop and think about how it is that the steering wheel mechanism really controls the car. We count on the steering system in our vehicles to control the car and direct it where we want to go. In both the manual and power steering, the clutch regulates the transfer of force from engine to the transmission. When it comes to rack and pinion steering, the rack is a metal bar which is connected to the steering arm of the wheel with the help tie rod. In a rack and pinion system, the rotation of the steering wheel forces the pinion to move the rack. It is the oldest and simplest of all the steering systems. The pinion is fixed to the end of the steering shaft. When the steering wheel is turned, the teeth on the pinion engage with the teeth on the rack and move the rack. This moves the inner tie rods, which in turn moves the tie rod ends and eventually the wheels. Most cars have the power steering system. In this, high pressure fluid and the piston plays a major role. When you turn the steering wheel, the pump passes the high pressure fluid which hits the piston. The piston moves the rack and helps to turn the front wheels of your car. Power steering fluid level should be checked regularly. The system should be flushed out completely and refilled with fresh fluid in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer's service schedule.
