Steering system plays a major role in a car. In that, steering wheel is an essential part of the system. Normally car steering parts include steering rack, steering gearbox, rack and pinion steering and etc. Nowadays, most of the modern car use power steering system. In both the cases of manual and power steering system, the gearbox uses the clutch to regulate the transfer of torque from engine to the transmission. The steering wheel is attached to a steering shaft.
Rack and pinion gear plays an important role in both the manual and power steering. The pinion gear meshes with the rack portion of the steering system. This is where the rotational movement of the pinion gear is converted to the linear motion used to move the front wheels. A tie rod is the part which connects the steering rack to the steering arm of the front wheels. So, when you turn the steering wheel, the pressure is passed through the steering shaft. The pinion which is connected with the steering shaft moves the rack either left or right according to the steering movement. The power steering systems use hydraulic components to assist the steering effort of the driver. Here, the rack has a slight change in its design. The steering pump is the heart of the power steering system. When you turn the wheel, the pump passes the hydraulic fluid and hits the piston. Thus the piston helps in moving the rack.
