Steering shaft is connected to the steering wheel which converts the rotational motion into linear motion. The pinion which is at the end of the shaft moves the rack according to the movement of the steering wheel. If your car has a power steering system, then it will be using hydraulic pump, which is mounted and fixed on the engine. The fluid in the automatic system is kept under pressure until the car's wheels are turned.
