In any car the wheels are controlled by the steering system. The steering system of any vehicle contains various parts. We know only about the steering wheel as it is the visible part of a steering system. There are various other parts that link the steering wheel and the tire. Any steering system cannot perform its best without the proper functioning of the steering parts. The steering system can be classified as manual steering and the power steering. The steering parts of the rack and pinion steering system having manual steering containing steering wheel, the shaft, the gear, the rack, the pinion, the tie rod, the steering arm, the spindle and the wheel. The rack and pinion steering system that adopts a power steering mechanism has slightly different Mercury steering parts which include the piston, the fluid lines, the rotatory valve, the steering column, the pump and the reservoir along with the manual mode parts. The rack-and-pinion steering gears are mostly used in Mercury cars and other passenger vehicles. This steering system consists of pinion gear at the end of the shaft. The grooves of the pinion sets with the rack grooves. When the driver turns the steering wheel, the cylindrical steering shaft rotates making the pinion gear at the end of the shaft also to rotate. This makes the rack to move from its position to the other side which in turn causes the tie rod to push or pull. This force is used to fix the steering knuckles or wheel spindles in their ball joint. The vehicle turns to the desired direction by this mechanism.
